Iontophoresis is a painless alternative to drug injection in which a weak electrical current is used to stimulate drug-carrying ions to pass through intact skin.
Medication, usually for pain or inflammation, is put in a specialized pad. The pad is then applied to the area of treatment. A small current that most patients can’t feel “pushes” the medication down into the treatment area. The pad looks like an over-sized Band-Aid is worn for 12 hours and then discarded.
This form of medication delivery is great for patients that are uncomfortable with needle injections and for patients requiring medication in sensitive areas.
